Vast, scenic, breath-taking. All these words have been used to describe the majestic beauty of Alaska. I was born in Anchorage and have lived throughout the state, moving back in high school. After going to college in Northern California and traveling throughout Asia during my undergraduate studies, I always returned to Alaska during summer and winter holidays. Although I have great passion for traveling and adventure, I need my feet to be unified with the soil from the place that I call “home.” It kept me balanced both as a person and an artist.

This past year I moved back to Anchorage, where I have been artistically inspired like no time before. Leaving the state opened my eyes to many inspirations Alaska has offered me artistically. Living in the hustle and bustle of not only San Francisco but also Tokyo, I have truly come to appreciate the “little big town” feel of Anchorage. No other “city” will you find gracious and genuine people like you will find in Anchorage. I can walk about the city on any given day and run in to a familiar face.

Recently I have had my very first art exhibit, a lifetime goal. An art show dedicated entirely to my self and work. I was both scared and ecstatic. Those that know me and met me know how passionate I am about my art; the love of my life.

Opening night of my exhibit was one of the most crowded exhibits this venue had ever held, so I hear. My supportive friends, family, coworkers and acquaintances not only brought themselves but their friends, family and so on. Word of mouth and through the grapevine, my exhibit was a First Friday Art Walk “buzz.” I was very excited about my art on display but even more amazed at the amount of genuine support my fellow Alaskans gave me as a “local” artist.

Alaska exudes natural glory in its landscape alone. In Anchorage we have the infamous Denali watching over our city in the distance along side the Sleeping Lady. Our neighbors of fish and moose too live in harmony. This natural beauty in combination with amazing people makes Anchorage the best place to live on this planet. That has inspired me as an artist and opened my artistic channel of creativity once blocked. I have become not only more aware of the beauty that surrounds me here in Anchorage but also amidst the intricacies of our greater world. My art emanates what I find beautiful and I thank you Anchorage, Alaska, for that. You are truly a world apart.

My name is Larissa Villar, and I live a Big Wild Life!™
